This Yohan tied-mouthed cup is made by Guo-Ping, Ji.
Shape:
The cup has the classic Jianzhan form -tied-mouth, a wide, flaring bowl that tapers down to a narrower base, with a smooth, curved profile.
Interior Glaze: The interior of the bowl showcases the most dramatic aspects of the Yohen glaze:
- Base color: A deep, rich purple that serves as the canvas for the other effects.
- Oil spot effect: Numerous circular spots of varying sizes are scattered across the surface. These spots appear to be primarily golden or silvery in color, creating a stark contrast against the purple background.
- Iridescence: There's a strong iridescent quality to the interior, with colors shifting between purple, blue, and pink depending on the viewing angle and lighting.
- Center pattern: In the very center of the bowl, there appears to be a concentration of larger oil spots, creating a focal point.
- Streaking: Subtle vertical streaks run from the rim towards the center, adding depth and movement to the glaze.
Exterior Glaze: The exterior glaze is equally complex but with some distinct differences:
- Color gradient: The exterior shows a more pronounced color gradient, transitioning from a brownish or golden tone at the rim to a deep blue-purple towards the base.
- Teal highlights: There's a prominent teal or turquoise band around the middle of the exterior, adding another layer of color complexity.
- Oil spots: The oil spot effect is present on the exterior as well, but the spots appear smaller and more numerous than on the interior.
- Texture: The exterior glaze has a slightly more textured appearance, with the oil spots creating a subtle relief effect.
- Rim: The unglazed or differently glazed rim provides a natural border between the interior and exterior effects.
This Jianzhan tea bowl with its Yohen glaze is an exceptional example of this rare and prized technique. The unpredictable and stunning results of the Yohen firing process create a unique, galaxy-like pattern that makes each piece one-of-a-kind.
