Exploring Fenghuang DanCong YaShiXiang A Fragrant Journey

Welcome back, tea lovers, to another chapter of TeaTalesDaily! Today, we’re diving into the enchanting world of Fenghuang DanCong (Phoenix Single Bush) YaShiXiang, an oolong tea from Guangdong’s Phoenix Mountains that’s as captivating as its whimsical name, “Duck Sh*t Aroma.” Don’t let the name fool you—this tea is a masterpiece of flavor and fragrance, and I’m thrilled to share my brewing experience with you. Check out the video below for a visual journey, and let’s steep into the details!
The Tea: Fenghuang DanCong YaShiXiang
Fenghuang DanCong teas are celebrated for their single-bush cultivation, where each tree yields leaves with distinct aromas and flavors. YaShiXiang, one of the most famous varieties, is known for its complex, floral, and grassy profile. The dry tea leaves in my batch caught my eye immediately with their slightly reddish hue, hinting at the careful oxidation that gives this oolong its unique character. These tightly twisted leaves are a promise of the vibrant experience to come.
Brewing the Perfect Cup
For this session, I used 7 grams of YaShiXiang leaves in a gaiwan, paired with 100°C (212°F) boiled water to fully awaken the tea’s aromas. Here’s how I brewed it:
  • First Brew (3 seconds): The moment the hot water hit the leaves, a fresh, layered aroma filled the air. The tea liquor poured a vibrant yellow-gold, glowing with clarity and warmth. The first sip was a revelation—grassy notes danced on the palate, followed by a delicate, light floral fragrance that lingered like a spring breeze.
  • Second Brew (3 to 5 seconds): The flavors deepened, with the grassy edge softening into a smoother, more pronounced floral character. The tea’s complexity began to unfold, offering a hint of sweetness that balanced its fresh profile.
  • Third Brew (5 seconds): By the third steep, the tea revealed its staying power. The floral notes became more refined, and a subtle creaminess emerged, making each sip feel like a journey through a blooming meadow.
The beauty of YaShiXiang lies in its ability to evolve with each infusion, rewarding patience with layers of flavor that shift and surprise.
Why YaShiXiang Stands Out
What makes Fenghuang DanCong YaShiXiang so special? It’s the harmony of its fresh, grassy vibrancy and elegant floral undertones, which feel both grounding and uplifting. The reddish hue of the dry leaves and the vibrant yellow-gold liquor reflect the tea’s meticulous processing, while its aroma—often described as orchard-fresh with a touch of lychee-like sweetness—lives up to its quirky nickname. This tea is a testament to the artistry of Fenghuang’s tea makers, who coax such depth from a single bush.
Tips for Brewing YaShiXiang at Home
  • Water Temperature: Stick to 100°C (212°F) to fully extract the tea’s bold flavors.
  • Steeping Time: Keep initial brews short (3-5 seconds) to avoid overpowering the delicate floral notes. Adjust slightly for later infusions based on taste.
  • Vessel: A gaiwan or small teapot works best to control steeping and appreciate the evolving aromas.
  • Quantity: Use 7 grams per 100-120ml of water for a balanced strength, perfect for multiple infusions.
